How do emotions have an effect on our bodies?

I love this article on the importance of emotional clearing for better health.
Ty Bollinger lists EFT (tapping) as one way of clearing negative emotions. He also quotes Lissa Rankin MD, one of my favorite authors and speakers, about not going through life alone; make sure you have support all around you.

This article supports the fact that the mind and body are one...

"The connection between the emotions and disease has been known for thousands of years in cultures all around the world. In the Bible, Proverbs 17:22-23 says: “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acknowledges the “7 Emotions” that are thought to have a direct correspondence to disease states. And in Yogic traditions, the term samskara means the “subtle impressions of our past actions” and it is thought that these impressions can form into patterns that can affect health.
And now modern science is discovering in astonishing detail how certain emotions can have a direct effect on disease − and healing − in the body.

What Science Says about the Emotions

The profound effect that emotions have on health and lifespan can be evidenced by a groundbreaking series of 10-year-long studies published in the British journal Psychology and Psychotherapy in 1988. The study, which is just as relevant today, concluded that “emotional stress was more predictive of death from cancer or cardiovascular disease than from smoking.” It also found that individuals who were the most affected by stress had an overall death rate that was 40% higher than non-stressed participants.
So just how do emotions have such an effect on our bodies?
The term psychosomatic is normally associated with “imaginary illnesses.” In fact, the term simply relates to the physiological connections between mind and body. In modern scientific terms, this connection happens through tiny molecular structures called neuropeptides.
Peptides, a form of ligand, are tiny bits of protein that are produced throughout the body. They are found in hormones such as endorphins, serotonin, and insulin, for example, and are key elements for life. Neuropeptides pave the way between the brain (i.e. our emotions) and the body.
When a thought triggers an emotion, neuropeptides transmit those feelings through neuropathways and extracellular fluid. Eventually these peptides will connect with cellular receptors throughout the body where they will have an impact on the functioning of body systems at all levels.
The late Candace Pert, author of Molecules of Emotion and one of the pioneers of psychoneuroimmunology, states:
“…the chemicals that are running our body and our brain are the same chemicals that are involved in emotion.”

How Your Emotions Affect Your Body

Here are just a few ways in which specific emotions affect specific bodily functions:
  • A University of Arizona study found that expressing affectionate feelings towards your loved ones can lower cholesterol;
  • A study published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology discovered that when subjects simply recalled the situation that had been the initial cause of stress, their blood pressure rates raised significantly. Another study at the University of Maryland Medical Center found that just the anticipation of laughter began to reduce the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline.
  • A study at Loma Linda University in California found that when individuals laughed at a funny movie, the levels of beta-endorphins, responsible for mood elevation, rose as well. In addition, Human Growth Hormone, which aids in sleep and contributes to cellular repair, rose by 87%.

Emotional Clearing for Better Health

Clearing emotions and managing stress go hand in hand. Before you can truly clear emotions, you must learn how to manage stress in order get cortisol levels down. Remember, there is a direct and proven correlation between chronically high cortisol levels (i.e. chronic stress) and cancer.
When you are in a relatively calm internal space memories and feelings associated with stressful situations can rise to the surface in order to be dealt with and cleared. Here are four basic things you can do NOW to manage stress, lower cortisol levels, and clear stressful emotions so that true healing can occur:
  1. Reflect on what keeps you stressed in your life and DECIDE to make a change. Divorce, the death of a loved one, finances, even happy occasions like getting married can add to the stress factor. A major source of on-going stress for many Americans is work-related. An Oxford Health Plans study found that 1 in 5 Americans will go to work even if they are ill, injured, or seeing a doctor that day. Reflect on what is causing you stress right now. On a scale from one to ten, how would you rate this stress? Decide if you want this number to go down. Then make a commitment to yourself and your health by determining to make a positive change towards lower stress overall.
  2. Consider tried and true modalities to manage stress. Once you have decided to lower stress and clear emotions for health, decide on some modalities that will help you get there! Consider EFT Tapping, reflexology, tai chi, massage, chiropractic care, meditation, prayer, journaling, exercise, and eating healthier. These are all things you can do STARTING NOW to lower stress responses and add a little more self-care to your life. Remember that self-care equals emotional care! And you don’t have to do them all. Simply choose one or two modalities, then give it a try. Even taking 10 minutes on your lunch break for a leisurely stroll can sometimes do the trick.
  3. Don’t go it alone. Study after study has shown that those who have the support of a caring group of loved ones have a better chance of coming out of a cancer diagnosis than those who “go it alone.” And according to Lissa Rankin, MD, “Individuals who attend religious services regularly live 7.5 years longer than those who never or rarely attend religious gathering.” So whether it is a church group, a cancer support group, or a group of loving friends, make a list of who you want on your “Healing A-Team” and the get the help and support that you need!
  4. Don’t be afraid to “sit” with your emotions. As we begin to take a break from the “24/7 stress fest” and begin to make room for reflection and healing, it is natural for deeper issues, memories or events to rise to the surface. Emotions may come out of nowhere, and this is very normal. Practice sitting with emotions as they rise to the surface and always remember that no matter how bad you may feel, these emotions are coming up to be released. They won’t last forever. In fact, there is a good chance that you will feel better after the tears come and go! Studies have found that emotional tears contain high numbers of stress hormones and neurotransmitters, leading researchers to conclude that crying is one way that the body removes stress chemicals.
In a way, modern science is discovering what the ancients knew long ago: emotional clearing is part of living a healthy, vibrant life and a part of the healing process. The reward for doing the work of emotional clearing is good health all around. "

I Don't Understand Why

photo: pixabay
Sometimes it feels like the weight of the world is on our shoulders, like we could crumble under the pressure of it all.
Those are the times that our head spins, we feel like we can't breathe and all we can think about is how bad things are.

Until we step back, take a deep breath and try to make sense of impossible situations, nothing will improve.

But, even doing that seems like a daunting task when your world feels gray and murky. When you are in that fight or flight situation, your body sends blood to your muscles for survival. Your brain doesn't function as well as it should to get you through emotional situations.

The tapping script below will force you to take 5 minutes to focus on your breathing, on your thoughts and help you to quiet your mind for a few minutes. You will be surprised how much better you feel after a few rounds of tapping.

Change the words to make it fit for your situation so it feels right for you. Repeat as often as necessary to keep you grounded and in control.

Leave a comment below to let me know how your mood/feelings changed.

If you are new to tapping please visit the "Introduction to Tapping" tab at the top of this page for a diagram and a short 4 minute "how to" video by Jessica Ortner.

Start with the "KC" or karate chop point as shown on the diagram

KC:
Even though I don't know why I am going through this, I deeply and completely love and accept myself

Even though I feel like my world is crumbling around me, I accept these feelings and everything they mean to me

Even though I can feel all of this uncertainty in my body, I am aware of these feelings and all the messages my body is sending me

EB:  I don't understand why

SE:  I don't deserve this
UE:  All this anxiety
UN: All of the unknown

CH: I can feel it in my stomach (change this to where you feel it in your body)
CB: It feels like someone punched me
UA: I can hardly breathe at times
HD: I need to catch my breath
WR: But it feels like the world is caving in on me

TAKE A DEEP BREATH and continue to the next round

UN: There is always someone else who has it worse
CH: But right now, I am falling apart
CB: I feel it everywhere
UA: I want it to stop

WR: I want to let this all go

TAKE A DEEP BREATH and continue to the next round

EB: I don't know how much longer I can go on like this
SE: Something has to change
UE: Either the circumstances
UN: Or me
CH: Which would be easier?
CB: Which makes more sense?
UA: I am open to the possibility that I may not have control of the situation
HD: I only may have control of me, my thoughts, my reaction
WR: I wonder if it could be that simple

TAKE A DEEP BREATH and continue to the next round

EB: It doesn't seem that simple
SE: But I am willing to forgive myself or anyone else that contributed to these feelings of despair

I Wish You'd Never Been Born!

"I wish you'd never been born!"  Those were the words that Bobbie heard from her father at her 5th birthday party, in front of her friends.  They were just a few of the painful words she had to hear through the years from her father.  This particular event was one of the most painful and traumatic that she had to deal with growing up, and one that continued to cause her pain decades later.

I want to share Bobbie's story with you in a powerful and extremely moving video, where Bobbie works with Nick Ortner -- NY Times best-selling author of "The Tapping Solution" and producer of the upcoming 6th annual Tapping World Summit -- on stage at a live event, and I'll tell you why...
In the video you'll get to see her use EFT Tapping, one of the most effective techniques I've ever seen used for personal change and growth, and see her go through an emotional and physical transformation right before your eyes.

Most importantly, I want you to see how you can use this same technique to change your life.
This is the 3rd video in the pre-event series that they've just released.  The other two were interviews with Dr. Wayne Dyer and with Dr. Lissa Rankin (both of which are great videos - you can get access to those as well if you're interested.)

Trust me when I tell you that you're going to be glued to this video!  Just watch the first couple of minutes and you'll see what I mean:

Let me explain more on why this video is life-changing...
All of us have dealt with childhood traumas, little or big events where we felt hurt, upset, scared, angry or any other painful emotion.  And many of these events, whether we realize it or not, continue to affect us today, in our beliefs, our level of confidence, the emotions we feel and so much more.

Take a second to think back on your childhood. What event or events come to mind where you felt hurt, upset, scared, angry or any other negative emotion?  When you think back on these events, how do you think they've affected you today?

This video will show you just how easily and quickly you can take the negative charge off of those memories and how you can release the conscious and unconscious holds that they have on you.

One thing that's especially interesting about this video is that it was filmed during a live event that is focused on the connection between our emotions and physical pain .  During the video, you'll actually get to see Bobbie get rid of the pain in her knees, something that she hasn't had happen in 25 years!

I Choose To Trust And Appreciate The Process

This past week has been particularly challenging for several people close to me. They have had to sit back and accept a situation that was out of their control, one that they so desperately wanted to help resolve.

Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair.
Certain situations are out of our control.

Maybe distance is a factor or the people involved don’t want help. Maybe it involves a situation on a national or global scale that you feel you should contribute to, but don't have the resources to do so.
None the less, it doesn’t feel any better when we can't be involved or aren't in control, especially when we are emotionally involved to some degree.

Whatever your situation is today, the following tapping script may help lighten the emotional burden you are currently carrying until the situation is resolved.
My wish is that it helps bring calm and peace to any situation that is weighing heavy on your mind today.

If you are new to this blog and unfamiliar with the tapping process, please see the "introduction to tapping" link at the top of this page.
It will provide you with everything you need to know!

As always, please change the words to fit your current situation

Karate chop point:

"Even though I want to help but I can’t, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway”
"Even though I feel helpless, I accept this feeling and everything it means to me”
"Even though this is out of my control, which is something I am not used to, I honor this part of my personality”

Round One:

EB: I feel so helpless
SE: I want to help (insert name) very badly
UE: I want to take their pain away
UN: I don’t like it when I am not in control
CH: That is hard for me to accept
CB: I am a fixer - I fix problems
UA: But I can’t fix this one
HD: I am not sure how to cope right now...
WR: The outcome is not within my control

** Now take a deep breath or two and proceed to the second round of tapping**

Round Two:

EB: In my heart, I know I have to let go
SE: I can't get caught up in the "how" of this situation
UE: This is going to be hard for me to do
UN: But if I don’t, it is going to eat away at me
CH: Eventually, it will eat away at my body
CB: It will manifest as a disease if I continue to focus on this situation
UA: What good will I be to those I love and CAN help, if I am sick
HD: I have to alter my thoughts about this situation right now
WR: Maybe this will all work out better than I ever imagined

** Now take a deep breath or two and proceed to the third round of tapping**

Round Three:

EB: I choose to let go of the "how" today
SE: I must trust that this situation is part of a bigger picture
UE: I choose to appreciate the process of diving timing
UN: This is a process of growing, loving and trusting in a higher power
CH: It all boils down to love for each other anyway
CB: So I am going to send my deepest love to ___ and this situation
HD: And accept the outcome to happen exactly as it is meant to happen
WR: I am feeling more calm, confident and peaceful now!

**Take a final deep breath and repeat as necessary**

Wishing you peaceful thoughts,
Cindy (Selvaggio) Shumaker

All This Back Pain!

I love to empower myself with self help books and when I first started reading self healing books, I was amazed to learn that so much of our pain is caused from stored emotions in the body.

That led me to think about many of my co-workers and friends who suffer from back pain. Many have no physical contributor to their pain and doctors can't find a medical reason, yet they are still in pain.

The only option many of them have is to pop a pill and mask the pain. That is fine for temporary relief, but the long term goal is to find the root of the problem and eradicate it like pulling a weed, root and all! If you don't pull out the root, the weed will pop up again, just like your back pain when the pain killer wears off.

Right now, many of you are saying, "but I have a physical reason for my back pain"!
For those that do have a diagnosed reason for your pain, there are emotions that are tied to that pain.

For example, I have a friend that broke her back in a car accident, and even though she has pins and rods and scars that give her pain, she still has emotions tied to that accident.

Those are the emotions I am talking about. The thoughts that still haunt you in regards to the event that led to your physical condition and pain.

I love Louse L. Hay's book "Heal Your Body", I have learned so much about myself and my body after reading her book.

Here's some interesting facts that I have picked up from her and other self help books about back pain:

Lower back pain: fear of money, lack of financial support
Middle back pain: guilt
Upper back pain: lack of emotional support; feeling unloved; holding back love

Typically, pain on the right side of the body is associated with finances and pain on the left side of the body is associated with relationships. For a minority of people, that can be flipped: right side = relationships and the left side = finances.

When I work with clients who are dealing with any kind of pain, I have them answer a questionnaire about the possible events and/or emotions associated with the pain. This enables me to get a better grip on the emotions that may be trapped in thier body.

Most are pleasantly amazed at the pain relief by the end of our session
By the way, 95% of my sessions are done on the phone!

I have provided a tapping script for back pain today!

Before you start tapping, please rate your pain and write it down on paper. Rate it from 1-10 with 10 being the worst. Describe the pain: dull, aching, stabbing, etc,

After 3 rounds of tapping, reassess your pain and write down your results. Did the pain number lessen, did it change locations, did it change from stabbing to aching? Write it all down.

Do a few more rounds and see if you can reduce it even further.

If you are new to this blog and unfamiliar with the tapping process, please see the "introduction to tapping" link at the top of this page.
It will provide you with everything you need to know!

As always, please change the words to fit your current situation

Karate chop point:

"Even though I have this excruciating back pain I deeply and completely love and accept
myself anyway”

"Even though I am so uncomfortable, I accept all the messages that my body is sending”

"Even though I can’t think of anything else except my pain, I love all of my body anyway”

Round One:

EB: This off the scale back pain
SE: I am so uncomfortable
UE: I can’t think about anything else right now
UN: My back is screaming at me
CH: It definitely has my attention
CB: I can't get comfortable
UA: I can't take any more pain pills
HD: I hate feeling this way
WR: I'm afraid this pain will NEVER go away

**Now take a deep breath or two and proceed to the second round of tapping**

EB: Even though I have ignored the messages my back has been sending me all this
time, I choose to listen to it now
SE: I deserve to feel healthy and whole
